This yearĀ marks the 157th running of the Melbourne Cup. The 2017 Melbourne Cup will be held onĀ Tuesday 7 November at 3pmĀ (AEDT). The first race meeting was held on the rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840 when the town of Melbourne was barely five years old. By 1880, 100,000 people would make the journey to Flemington to attend the Cup. As Melbourneā€™s population was only 290,000 at the time, this attendance was quite phenomenal, and many visitors came from the country and other Australian colonies, too. These were flourishing times as Melbourne continued to grow during and after the gold rush period.

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most loved and well-known horse race. Not only this but it also features the richest handicap in the world and the prize money and trophies make it among the richest horseraces in the world.

The race is held atĀ Flemington RacecourseĀ in Melbourne, Victoria on the first Tuesday in November annually. It marks a time when Australians come to a collective stand-still to take in this famous horse race.
The Melbourne Cup is steeped in tradition and folklore, with the names Phar Lap, Tulloch and Makybe Diva as recognisable as any in the annals of Australia’s sporting history. But as November approachesĀ the focus shifts to theĀ future, amid mounting speculation around which horse will be added to the illustrious honor roll.
